On Saturday I finally manged to do some work on boat.
here is what I did:

it wasn’t easy but I manged to scrape one side. Also I mounted new propeller. I didn’t have access to electricity so I did it by hand. Very slow, took me almost the whole day just for one side and it isn’t finished yet.
16 janvier 2017 à 23 h 07 min #14955Tomorrow I will try to remove it with a chisel but it’s going to be a long and tiring job. I will take some photos and maybe even a video.
I’m really waiting to see your video since I couldn’t find anything on youtube about removing material similar to the one on my boat. It is in most places glued pretty heavily.
When I get access to electric power (pull my boat out) I will be able to use electric drill with a steel brush.
Yes, I suspect it is leaking from the bolts holding the bow pulpit and the wood is totally rotten so I have to remove it and put something else in it’s place after I stop the water from leaking anymore, at least temporarily until I can remove the pulpit completely and redo all the connections, bolts…
Yes, I saw Pascal photos, but I didn’t see any that covers removing old vinyl.15 janvier 2017 à 15 h 51 min #14952Sorry for english language but I think it would be even worse if I’d translate it with google translate.
Ok, today I went on boat to check on it, because there was some bad weather couple days ago. The boat was ok, but some other boats in port got grounded. I pulled out the old original anchor and I’m probably going to replace it with a 10 kg Kobra anchor but if I found someone who could make a replica of the old anchor I will keep it on boat as a reserve because I was very happy with it’s performance and it can remain stored in original place with the new anchor on bow. Also I took home the chain and rope to inspect.
Then I got on the inside to and my first idea was to remove the trays in kitchen and to paint them at home aso to clean up some wooden surfaces in saloon so that I can paint them once it gets a bit hotter.
But then I saw the water in the front cabin and then I pulled and broke triangular plywood that was glued to the anchor chain pit. After that I unscrewed the slat that was holding the top end of the leatherette but then I discovered that the wood underneath the slat was completely rotten (obviously that is where the water is leaking) and I started pulling leatherette but it’s not going as easy as I hoped.
Here are photos:https://goo.gl/photos/6PUGHiwWKX6b8vzt9
Now I have few questions:
Is that rotten wood on pictures constructional part of the boat, what can I replace it with, there is at least half a meter of it that is rotten. Some other wood or maybe something that would be easier to work with and insert.
Has anybody removed the old leatherette and with what? Any chemicals or specials tools that could help or must I peel it of centimeter by centimeter17 décembre 2016 à 22 h 17 min #14924Hi Pascal74,
thanks for the link, I saw that photos earlier but I couldn’t find them now… They are very helpful, thanks again!
Was it hard to remove old « fabric » from the sides?
Was there allot of sanding afterwards? Because I’m thinking about starting before I get access to electricity.
I’m thinking about putting 0.5 cm of cork and then the fabric for insulation and a bit softer feel against a wall-kids banging with their heads :) Which fabric did you use later? Please give me some link or some description so that I can google it.
I would like to keep the wood (that parts that you painted blue, and it looks great) visible but I would like it to be a bit more lighter, right now it’s looking quite old and dark. Any suggestions on that? Just a varnish or should I mix it with something?
Does anybody have any ideas as from where could my boat be leaking. It’s in line and starboard with that rotten board that I said I removed (on the picture) that sort of separates the cabin and the anchor.Just having a cold beer so cheers everyone.
13 décembre 2016 à 20 h 45 min #14913Nice picture (the one of the boat) ;)
I don+t have a hole yet, but all the wood is rotten.https://goo.gl/photos/mp3SebSvxYeBHu687
Do you know what,is behind that board? I’m afraid it’s all wet or at least damp behind that wood and I’m wondering how to dry it up since my boat is leaking on few places (left window, front window a bit, and quie a lot in the front cabin to the right but I don’t know where) so there is always a lot of water after rain on the lowest part of the boat.
If there is foam as someone said, I think I’m going to remove rotten wood and then close close it up to half with foam to prevent water from going forward in the hole and leave it open for a summer to dry completely.https://goo.gl/photos/V6SwN4BdKMX7F8GY9

This images shows damage on the front seat, under that shorter piece of « pillar » that stands on it. That makes me quite nervous because I think that means that the rotten wood (the bigger pillar) is not holding weight of the mast anymore.
I’m wondering if it would be sufficient to cut the rotten part of the wood and just replace it with new piece of wood and tha glue it all together. I would use some sort of lifting mechanism to lift the roof couple of cm to insert the new part of the wood and also to straighten and repair the plastic part that is broken on the last picture.
Sorry for links to images, they are too big for forum and I don’t know how to reduce their size.
10 décembre 2016 à 9 h 47 min #14910I have a 2T 8hp yamaha in my edel4’s well and it also used to smoke in the well through two port holes on back of the engine’s leg. I was also thinking about putting a hose but then i tried to plug the holes and the engine worked as it did with the holes open. So I just keep them plugged and there is no smoke unless I’m running the engine in nutral.
I don’t know if it is possible on 4T engines. Would be great to know because I’m thinking of buying a newer engine.
What engine did you get? What is the fuel consumption and most importantly the noise?10 décembre 2016 à 9 h 39 min #14909Congrats on buying the boat, we are very happy with our e4, I hope that yours will serve you as well ;)
Sorry for English but I don’t speak French. Please take photos because on mine Edel 4 also the pillar that supports the mast is starting to rot on it’s bottom part. I was reluctant to change it because the mast is up and I was not in a port where I could take it down. I will do that in the spring, when I pull the boat out for antifouling. It would be great to get some measurments before that.
I will take some pictures tomorrow to show what’s going on with my pillar.
Also, as I’m planing to renew my e4 inside this winter and spring it would be great if someone else was doing it at the same time.
Cheers7 mars 2016 à 14 h 34 min #14537Great, thanks!
Mine is 32 liters and 9A max consumption but I hope that is only when freezing to -24. :) (Danfoss compressor tabel of power consumption I don’t understand)
Can you please measure outside dimensions of your fridge if it’s not too much trouble. What do you use to power that fridge? I now have on boat 55Ah battery and 40w solar panel and I used that to charge my cell phones, laptop, sonar and lights, but that is too small for a fridge so I will add another 100w panel and 100 Ah battery + I will try to connect Yamaha 8 2t to charge batteries when motoring. I hope that should give enough electricity for 3-5 days between ports where I will be able to plug into 220V and charge batteries.7 mars 2016 à 9 h 55 min #14534Great for finding that picture. Thanks tom.
That is a place where I would like to put the fridge. Pascal, can you tell me what are dimensions of the that fridge on Bobato so that I can get the picture if my fridge will fit in that place. I think mine has more depth. Is that fridge a top loader or front loader?
What would you say, is that place ok for a fridge (accessibility, ventilation,…) ?!6 mars 2016 à 22 h 09 min #14531Thanks guys, I saw that article from Zwicker but I have a top opening fridge (I think roro put the fridge in the same place that I’m thinking to. I found ONE picture, :s). I would much like to keep the boat galley as it is and only add the fridge next to it on a starboard bunk/bed. It is pity that there is a « cold » compartment underneath that will become unusable if I put the fridge there but I think that is the only place where I can put it. Also my electricity switch board is on that place so I will have to remove that also… Maybe under the table?
Does anybody have a 12V fridge on E4 on? How much power it consumes and is it an overkill on such a boat? How many and how strong solar panels and battery?4 mai 2015 à 23 h 00 min #13993Hello,
I didn’t listen to your advice(I had to do it my way because of car plus trailer weight and B category) and manage to get Moustique to Croatia from Netherlands. It wasn’t a walk in the park (we had to cross the Alps because of gps fault) but it was ok.Now the boat is getting ready for Adriatic se. Nothing much; just some work on the underwater part of the hull and new antifouling, new coushines – only the fabric, and some cleaning. Otherwise the boat seems in great shape so not too much job to do. I hope to have her in water by the end of next week. Then registration to Croatian papers and sailing!!!
I’ll post pics in new theme, introducing the boat.
1 décembre 2014 à 18 h 55 min #13778Hello to everyone from Croatia.
I just bought an Edel 4 in Netherlands and am also looking for a trailer to transport it to Croatia.
I found a trailer in Netherlands with rollers http://www.salaho.nl/res/Trailers2/slhbt1350800x300.jpg
Do you think that would be appropriate for Edel 4, maximum nett weight is 1400 kg but I wonder if it would be possible to have the boat put in and out of the water without lifting in a boatyard. To come with the trailer in water and put the boat on trailer and drive away (by winch on a trailer as it it possible with a smaller dinghy)? ThanksSorry for English, here is google translate:
Merci -
